More Realistic Timpani

I was looking for a softer sounding tuned-drum than the General MIDI Timpani patch produces (especially with fast drumbeats), and found Steel Drums (#115) to be an improvement. Feedback?

The GS soundsets and many of the GM soundfonts have tuned timps on patch 48 (or 49 depending on the patch number system) on the Channel 10 percussion channel.
These may be better than the timps in the GM timp patch.

Patch 48/49 is the Orchestral drum patch, and it assigns all notes between low F (the space directly below the bass staff) and the the F one octave higher to timpani at notated pitch.

Be aware, though, that not all cards may support this patch. For example, my PC at home (SB32 AWE Gold) does; the noname card in my PC at work seems not to.
