Incorrect notes

When I copy notation from one window to another, if I change the key, it continues to play in the original key.
For example, I highlight some music on the treble clef in, say, the key of D and using Ctrl-C I take it to another window with new staves and paste it, then change the key to C, it continued to play in the key of D.
This makes life difficult when I start entering notes in C on the bass clef.
The treble clef is playing in D and the bass clef in C, even though the notes are clearly printed in the same key.
Has anyone had this problem?

Hi Brian,

I suspect that you need to know how to transpose rather than just change the key. You can't transpose the staff just by changing the key signature.

When you paste into your new window, make sure that you also enter the old key if that was not included in the copy.
Then go to Tools / Transpose staff and select the number of semitones you want to transpose by (up or down).
Make sure that the "Update playback transposition" is checked. Then click OK.

This will properly transpose the selection and will update the key automatically.

Example

Copy a section that is written in Key D to a new staff
make sure that the old key signature of D is entered at the beginning.
Then do a Tools Transpose key. Enter -2 (minus 2) semitones.
Make sure update playback transposition is checked.
Click OK.

The staff will be transposed to the key of C and the key signature will be updated to reflect that.

Uhh - Rich -- if you check "update playback transposition" and transpose the staff from D to C, it will continue to sound in D. If Brian wants to change the sound from actual D to actual C, he will have to uncheck "update playback transposition."

Brian, it is somewhat unclear from your post just what you are trying to do. If you have written a part for a transposing instrument (e.g., a trumpet or a clarinet) in concert pitch and are transposing it to the key the instrumentalist will play in, then you need to do as Rich has suggested. But if you have written out a part for a transposing instrument in the key of the instrument (such as writing a part for a Bb trumpet in D when the score is in C), and are trying to paste that part into the score and transpose it to concert pitch - as I suspect you are - then you need to uncheck "update playback transposition" when you transpose the staff. It's checked by default.

Arghhh!  Always get those two mixed up. Usually have to try it out and see which one I need - which I didn't do before answering.
