entering notes of different values

How do you enter one note above another when they are of different values. eg common notes in two different chords.?

You should also look into the advantages of layering. In general:

use the chord member command if you are combining notes with the same duration, or for simple two-part writing (lower notes with stems down; upper notes with stems up; no more than two different note durations in the same chord).
use layering for all other vertical note-combining purposes.

Layering is the only way to get more than two different note durations in the same chord, or to place notes with stems up beneath notes with stems down. If you have trouble with notes or accidentals running into each other in different layers, use the extra note spacing and extra accidental spacing commands on the Notes tab in the Notation Properties dialog box (obtained by highlighting the note or notes you want to change and pressing <alt><enter>).
