problem

When I attempt to load a file (one that comes with the program, for example)
The program hangs up ... mouse is not getting a response and
Control-alt-delete gets me out of the program. Any Ideas?
I do have the program running on one computer but I would prefer
to work on my other one in the shop!

Sounds like either a problem with the installation, or your soundcard setup. Try opening the program, then go to Tools, Options, Midi and make sure the driver you have listed is installed and valid, and try not to have more than 1 driver. If the midi setup is correct, you may have to uninstall NoteWorthy and reinstall it, as it may have had an incorrect installation routine. Make sure you have the latest version! (1.52a)

Obviously your circumstance is unusual, or there would be many complaints. Some more information is really necessary before trying any sort of diagnosis, such as:

- What version of Windows are you using?
- What version of NWC are you using?
- Is it 16-bit or 32-bit edition of NWC?
- How much memory (RAM) is on your computer?
- What kind of processor is in your computer (386, 486, Pentium, AMD, Cyrix, etc.)?
- Can you open any files at all?
- What status bar message is shown when it locks up?
- Can you import MIDI files?
- Can you start a new file using File New?
- Can you save a file that you create?

Short of this extra info, a good first step would be to acquire the latest version, just as Adam indicates.

I have a feeling that there is some conflice in the irq and port
assignments. I am using win 3.1 8 megs ram. I have no sound
card but I do have a midi port that is responding. The options
midi steps suggested by Adam show me that without the proper
driver there I get the message driver problem go fix it...
(those are not the exact wording!)

Hey! Tell me why this makes a difference...
I changed the monitor color to 16 colors.
Now it is working!

This probably means that your original problem was caused by your display driver. You should probably check for an updated display driver for your system.

I had similar headaches with Win3.1, in fact this didn't even have the 800x600x256 and 1024x768x256 drivers. I upgraded to Win3.11 ("Windows for Workgroups") and all my display-related problems went away.

I'd agree. Win 3.11 is much more stable than Win 3.1 and I'd urge anyone with 3.1 to upgrade if they are having problems.
I really like Win 95, tho, even if it uses far more memory to function.
