I'm having two issues. First, the staves are connecting to one another on the left hand side. Second, the whole notes sometimes display a great deal of visual space (1 inch), and other times, the bar lines are close together (1/4 inch).
I would like to create completely separate staves (not connected), and to be able to reduce the amount of visual space between bar lines for whole notes.
Sounds like you are creating a new staff for each exercise... Try this:
1) Create a single staff.
2) Input the first exercise.
3) Place a barline then highlight it (<Shift-Left or Right>)
4) Open the properties dialogue (<Alt-Enter>)
5) Make sure the "Bar Line" tab is active
6) Check ([u[F[/u]orce System Break (Top Staff Only)
7) Click OK
Input the next exercise and repeat steps 3 to 7 until done.
This will create a single long staff in the editor BUT when printed each exercise will be on a new staff - NO grouping line at the left. Check this in print preview.
For the space taken by each note I suggest you play with |File|Page Setup||Options (Tab)|Increase spacing for longer notes (checkbox)
