fitting ties into a measure

In order to fit the tie notes into a measure I have to decrease the prior half note to a double dotted quarter note, then I can add the four 64th duration tie notes to the second half-notes chord in the measure.  But I notice in the NWC composition "Caverns" measure 40, there is a half note and a half note chord with the 5 tie notes in the measure.  What am I doing wrong?  I even removed the ties from the tie notes in Caverns, but it still plays properly and I also changed the duration of the tie notes and it still sounds the same.

Thanks for the help.  Sorry if I posted in the wrong place.  Is it customary to set the grace notes as 32nd duration?

For NoteWorthy, yes. There is no standard for the duration of a grace note (or from where it gets time).
