MIDI Keyboard input

I have my keyboard using MIDI set up and running and when i play a note it comes out but when i play more than one note (not at the same time) it combines them. Is there some sort of setting I can change that would make it write a trailing note instead of combing notes.

I assume that you are describing step time entry:

In this mode, if you are holding any current key, then all other keys that you press will be combined into a chord. The trick is to release all keys before entering the next note.
