New version sounds "Tinny"

With my old Creative soundblaster 16-bit card, strings sounded like  strings, and orchestras sounded like orchestras. With my new 24-bit  Creative soundblaster card, the same music sounds like "Mickey Mouse  and the Chipmunks" rather than the National Symphony Orchestra as it  should be.

What is causing this difference?

Hi Ian,
you might try checking what synth NWC is using - |Tools|Options Select the Midi tab and check the "Devices used by play back:"

The possibility is high that the first one in the list (if there is more than one) is either "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" OR "Microsof MIDI Mapper"

Change it to your sound card's built in synth.  Make sure it is the only one in the list to avoid confusion.

If this doesn't help you could try looking at alternative sound fonts.

go to instrument change, predefined instruments, change list and try the various instruments in each file. In order to get a good flute sound i have to go to the above, classic nwcitree, mt32, flute 1. and there it is  rik

Thanks for the suggestions. I have gone back to using NWC1.75 after a disk crash and haven't bothered with the new sound card any longer, back to using 16-bit Creative card - the 24-bit card from Creative doesn't sound nice although it has wonderful features. As to changing the output device, NOTHING BUT Microsoft's Wavetable Synth would work in NWC - believe me, I tried EVERYTHING to get it to work.

I am very impressed with the Version 2 Player - it at least plays sounds very well through the MS Wavetable Synth. I would like to hear when the full version 2 is available and what it costs (remember we pay 7 times what the USA pays!)
