Live Performance

I'm putting this on the forum rather than as a Hint and Tip because I can't guarantee the continued availability of the download I'm going to refer to later. In the earlier thread 'Writing Versus Recording Melodies' (https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=503) the irregularity of tempo produced by a live performance is discussed. Entering a song note by note gives a more accurate score, but lacks the 'feel' of a live performance. But there is a way to fake this, and a superb example is on John Roache's Ragtime page, http://members.aol.com/ragtimers Go to this page and click on Classic Ragtime in the left hand column, then download the Wall Street Rag file. (The Maple Leaf Rag is also worth downloading - it's a cracking rendition!) Unzip Wall Street and import the midi file into NWC. (Suggested Wizard settings are 1/16th note, 1/8th rest, chord size 34). You will see that a third tempo staff appears with varying tempi throughout the piece. Most effective and a technique which I hope you find useful.

One of my great joys in using NWC is in fact scoring the accels, decels, pauses, tempi changes, dynamics - having entered the notes. Turns it from a score into a performance. See http://www.pcug.org.au/~apurdam/music/carmen.mid for an example of a piece that was copiously scored for dynamics (esp. LOUD!) and speed.

Thanks, Andrew. The Carmen piece is indeed very impressive. My browser (Netscape Navigator) played the files fine, but it would appear that they aren't downloadable in their present form. Any chance you could make them so, or perhaps e-mail an attachment to me?

Thanks again, Peter.

Wot! You again? I hear you say!

Belay the above, Andrew. I've found your superb Web page and downloaded the zip files. Terrific!

Peter.

I can't find a NWC version of the Carmen piece. Is it at your website?
