I'm unable to access the Scriptorium...

Time is 8:21 CST USA.

I am unable to access the Scriptorium.

I'm running a firewall, ZoneAlarm, and I suspect that my "Program" settings are preventing access.

Is the server having a problem or (more likely) am I just gettin' too tough on security?

Anyone have any suggestions as to what is required by way of "Cookie" settings and Browser settings?

Thanks.

Hello,

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble accessing the Scriptorium.

I have just checked and nothing is wrong at the moment - so the fault must be at your end somewhere.

There are no particular requirements for the Scriptorium. Any browser should be able to access the site and there are no requirements for cookies. The site does not use anything special.

I can't see that it would be your firewall that stops access however, I have heard that sometimes the internet explorer content advisor (Tools / Internet options/ Content) can cause problems of this nature. If you haven't got this switched on, then DON'T TOUCH IT. Could lead to trouble for evermore unless you are sure of what you are doing.

If you have access to another browser (say Opera) then it might be worthwhile trying that to see if that will work.

You don't say what happens when you try to access the site. Is it just a blank screen? Do you get an error message? Does it just sit there with the address in the top line but without loading?
Rich.

Thanks for your replies and suggestions.  However tonight, 11/16,  everything is working OK.  I did not change a thing.  I haven't even re-booted.

I have a good firewall and up-to-date anti virus software running full time.  I also did a full virus scan both with my software and online.  Nothing showed up.

It is strange that last night I was able to access and post to this forum, but be unable to access the Scriptorium and now, with no changes, everything is working OK.

Sometimes it is mighty hard to track down an intermittent problem.  If it shows again, I'll have more to say.

I must say that this has left me scratchin' my head...

A variety of issuers can contribute to problems like this. The most common in my experience is DNS issues (resolving domain names to their Internet numeric addresses). You can sometimes ascertain more about the cause of your problem by:

  • Opening a console window:
in Windows 2000 or XP, click Start, Run, then CMD followed by <Enter>

  • Tracing the route to the URL:
Type tracert <domain.name> followed by <Enter>
If you have a DNS issue, the trace won't even start as it will not be able to translate the URL into a host IP address. If the trace starts, you will see how many hops are successful.

In cases like this, as mentioned above, trying another browser  can help. Opera is a good choice, and Firefox gets a lot of attention these days as well, for good reasons. Yours to try  - free. No trial periods, just have fun.
