Replacing instruments in "Microsoft GS Synthesizer"

Does "Microsoft GS Synthesizer" (in Windows XP) allow to  replace some instruments from the set it contains (GM)
by other instruments? Or to add new instruments? Is it possible to use Sound Fonts? My attempt was not successful.
