Better Sounds

I was just wondering how i could get better midi sounds.  I love to write music, but some of the instruments sounds like crap (i.e., clarinet, any saxophone) and i just want to have a better playback sound.  So if u have any info on what i can get, plz send me some info.

soundfonts?  what are those?  could you explain [abbr=cuz im a moron...]in detail[/abbr]?

Soundfonts are collections of recorded instrument sound samples.
These are small audio files distributed over the range of each instrument in an attempt to capture the live sound of the instrument.
Creative soundcards (AWE32, AWE64, SB Live, Audigy) use soundfonts.
The fonts may be stored in RAM on the soundcard (32 and 64) or are loaded into system memory (SB Live and Audigy).

Soundfont are produced for individual instruments or as a collection, most of this type cover the 128 GM instrument patches.
Early soundcards created sounds with combinations of oscillators producing different waveforms to mimic instrument sounds known as FM Synthesis and they sounded artificial.
Soundfonts use recorded samples and are much closer to actual sounds.

Synthfont and Timidity are two programs that can process soundfonts stored on your hard drive even if your soundcard does not support soundfonts directly.
These programs create an audio signal from a MIDI which is processed by the audio section of the soundcard, bypassing the FM Synthesis features of the card.
They can also record MIDI output as a wave or mp3 file.
