Since the system tray icon is gone, it means either that (a) the driver did not load when you started the system, or (b) something caused the driver to be unloaded from memory.

That doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with the sound card itself.

Before all else: Re-boot your system. That will attempt a re-load of the sound card driver. Did that fix things?

If not, then right-click "My Computer" (or, go to the System panel in the Control Panel). I don't have ME, but on other Windows systems you would want to "manage devices" or "view hardware." You will get a list of all the things that make up your system, including internals an peripherals. If there is a problem with the sound card, then the panel may tell you something.

You can also try the start menu > accessories > system information and see if there are any problem devices listed.

One other possibility: Did you recently install any other hardware? There is an off-chance that a new device has stolen an IRQ away from your sound card.

Diagnosing hardware is difficult. Hope that a re-boot solves the problem!
