No sound, NWC won't start

I was attempting to play MIDI files on Winamp.  It worked initially.  When I came back the MIDI files would not play.  I deleted the Winamp and a folder that the computer said had to be deleted manually (this might have been the mistake, they were plug ins or something that had to do with sound).  I re-installed Winamp.  Now there is no sound for the MIDI files on my Windows Media Player and my NWC files do not play.  In fact they don't even start.  The first note is highlighted red and just stays there.

See if there's a setting in Winamp or in your system sound setttings to enable digital playback.

I have yet to find the digital playback on Winamp or my PC, but I did this:

Sounds and Audio Devices Properties;
audio;
MIDI music playback default device;

SoundMAX Digital Audio was the original setting.  I changed it to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.  It plays, but distorts sound quality.  I still need assistance.
