electric guitar overdrive and distortion

hey, can anyone tell me if I can change the amount of distortion and overdrive for an electric guitar, frim the General MIDI database, so that it sounds heavier?

I wouldn't know if it can be done directly in MIDI, or directly with NWC. But what you can do is record the MIDI to an audio WAV file, Then apply distortion to the audio file. If there is a combination of distorted and undistorted instruments, you would have make a MIDI of the guitar alone, a MIDI of the remaining instruments, audio files of each, distory only the guitar, then merge the audio tracks.

That's not as difficult as is sounds. I have done it myself, but using my own voice (rather than guitar) as the distorted track. NWC to WAV is discussed in many places, such as !(usertip(136). There are any number of good sound editors available. You might be able to use Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net for that purpose. Some of the distortion effects seem to have been created by guitar players.
