At the risk of seeming stupid I think in this case its not actually redundant at all...
As Milton says: ...MIDI itself is not a hardware device or software, but a protocol..., actually, he is only half right because MIDI is a standard that also defines a lot of other things like the connectors to be used and the electrical characteristics of the signals themselves etc.
However, as "Musical Instrument Digital Interface" is the name of a standard and a MIDI interface is a device that adheres (we hope) to that standard then the double use of the word is not actually redundant after all.
