rests

Hi  i'm writing a piece in 4/4  and there is a bass note of 2 beats .  Over and above this half note i want to put an 1/8 rest note but don't know how to proceed.  The reason being, is that the melodic note has an 1/8 rest.

1: Set stem-up (Shift - Up-arrow)
2: Set 1/8 duration (4)
3: Enter the rest (space)
4: Set stem-down (Shift - Down-arrow)
5: Set 1/2 duration (2)
6: Position the cursor where you want the note
7: Press CNTL-Enter.

Done! Note that the resulting "chord" will have the smaller duration (1/8) assigned to it (even though the note will play for the entire 1/2-note duration). You can then set stem-up and add the rest of your melodic line.
