MIDI bank, software or hardware?

In order to use "Select a patch bank" in "Properties for Staff" I must have a convenient soundcard. Now I have Sound Blaster Extigy but apparently it doesn't support this.
However I have read that it is possible to make use of more than the normal 128 instruments if you e.g. buy some software called "Surreal".
Is that right?
