Ties/ overlapping notes

I have several problem spots in this composition.  I already have it sounding fine with Cakewalk, but need to print it.
First problem is a measure of 3/4 with two half notes on the first beat, and two different half notes on the second beat.  Only thing it will let me do is put 3 groups of quarter notes with ties between the held notes, which looks pretty sloppy; I can't enter a quarter rest on the first beat while the half notes are there and follow it with the other half notes, which is how I've seen it done.

Other thing is the same problem, different situation: three notes played an 8th note apart, all held and cut off together- but there are other notes sounding, so a Pedal point is not an option.

Any way around this oversight?

This sounds like exactly the sort of situation where "staff layering" comes to the rescue.

Add a new staff under the problem staff. Use something such as invisible (hidden) rests to fill it out, where needed. In the problem area, transfer some of the problem notes/rests to the new staff. This allows you to treat the notes/rests on the two staves independently. When ready, layer the new staff under the original staff. Be sure to verify your result in print preview.

Thanks, Robert, I've figured out how to do this.  The help file was silent about the fact that you have to check "Allow Layering" under File->Page Setup; the URL and other info mentioned by support staff in other threads was nonexistent; so, though I read references to layering staves, I had to find out how to do so and how to make it visible through experimentation.  ¡Ay Caramba!
What I've seen of this forum is great.  Seems like this program is worth the dough.

Later,
Chuckk

You can, however, put the 1/4 rest and 1/2 note together, but you MUST enter the rest first, then the note.
