adding a double barreled note

Thanks Fred for that help. I now have Bookmarks 2 installed- I printed out the NWC file- the double-barrled whole note is indicayed by a degree symbol, and in parenthesis is (alt0176). My question is how do I get that symbol on screen?

In case Fred misses it, this thread is actually a continuation of another thread about installing the boxmarks2 font.

Once the font is installed your system (if necessary, re-boot), then it needs to be "installed" in your specific NWC composition. This is on a file-by-file basis.

Open the composition, menu file>page setup>fonts. Specify boxmarks2 as a user font. Experiment to find the best size, as it will depend on the staff size you are using.

Use a character map to find the symbols you need. Most character maps allow you to copy a symbol to the Windows clipboard, so you can paste it later.

In NWC, position the cursor where you want the symbol to appear. Then, insert text (keystroke command: X). A dialog box opens. Paste the symbol, and specify the user font. The text may appear as ordinary Times font in the dialog box, but it will be the correct symbol in your composition. The symbol may be repositioned as necessary.

If you are going to send your NWC file elsewhere, the recipient must have boxmarks2 installed. Or, you can use font embedding of PDF douments, if you have that capability.

Remember that user fonts are specified on a file-by-file basis. They are not installed to the NWC program itself.

When you place a symbol as "text" it is, in a sense, free-floating. That is, it does not affect MIDI output or other notation. If you place a double-barred note as "text" in a measure, NWC will not treat it as a note at all. To fill the measure (for alignment with other things), you will have to place real notes or rests, and hide them (invisible).

Phillip:

With Boxmarks as User Font 1.
Enter a text expression.
Select User Font 1.
Position the text at the correct staff position.
In the text box:-
Hold down the ALT key while typing 0176.

Incidentally the 'degree' symbol should not have been re-assigned. It has a use as a diminished chord symbol.
