1/4 NOTE

I can enter 1/2 notes and whole notes under or over a quarter rest on the left hand piano staff but not a quarter note. should i be able to?

You have to use staff layering for this.

I found an answer to my own question. I enter a half note then highlight it and change it to a quarter note.

I also meant to mention that when placing a half note  above or below a quarter rest that the stem has to be alternated between stem up and stem down or it will not work
Same stem requirement applies to a whole note.
