MIDI-PC setup question

I've been dabbling in the electronic music production area recently, having put together a few loop based songs i thought it's time to progress, and i find i can't go much further without mastering MIDI. I am completely new to the MIDI concept and while i understand the principles of it now i can't seem to find an answer on whether the (ultra-basic) gear i have at the moment is compatible to use MIDI control. I have...

333 mhz PC
Sound Blaster 16
Yamaha Keyboard with Midi in/out

I heard all you need to connect is a MIDI to joystick-port cable (which i also have). Is this true? I have connected it up but i'm left with a spare socket end which is like a 15 hole female joystick end. I took it as an unhealthy sign.

Anywayz, can i get anything happening with this gear, n' if so... how?

me = lost

The extra joystick connector you're left with is - for a joystick. That's so you can use a joystick and midi control at the same time. Not to worry.

Have a look at https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=1795, which in turn points to some other threads on the subject.
