Fermata Issue

Is it possible to add an upside-down fermata (say, as seen on the left hand of a grand staff score) in Noteworthy?

Good morning,
at the time being, it's not possible with NWC directly. But you can use a text item, for example with the boxmark2 font, character "'" (Alt+0039, single quote).
A "real" Fermata item may be needed, in that case you can hide it (or use one on the other staff to implement the delay needed)

I Hope This Helps!

When I say "it's not possible with NWC directly", I just mean that it is not a "tempo variance" item as you would with a "normal" fermata. But you don't need extra software than NWC to do this :)

To rephrase marsu's reply: The answer is YES, an upside-down fermata can be placed in NWC. However, the symbol is not one of the standard decorations available from the program menus. You must install a font that has the symbol (such as boxmarks2, downloadable from the Scriptorium). The symbols is placed  wherever you wish, as a "text" item.

Symbols placed as "text" do not affect MIDI output. If you wish the fermata to be heard in MIDI, then you must place an ordinary fermata using the NWC menu. The ordinary fermata can be hidden, so that only the upside-down fermata shows on printout.

In other words, the upside-down fermata is seen but not heard; the ordinary fermata is heard but not seen.

The method is used for a number of other effects in NWC. For example, a "hairpin" crescendo can be visually placed using the crescendo font (also on the Scriptorium) as text. But the MIDI effect of gradually rising (or diminishing) volume is created from the NWC menu, using a multi-point controller.

If your only usage is printed scores, then you only need to place the text symbol. If your only usage is MIDI, then you only need to make the appropriate  choice from the NWC menus. If you need both, then you do both.

When I export from NWC to MIDI, all fermatas are ignored.  I've been "faking" fermatas with tempo changes (eighth-note=20 or whatever) to accomplish the effect.  Do I have some settings wrong?  Or does this happen for everyone else?

No, you're quite right. NWC does not export fermatas. If you want to export them to MIDI, you need to do as you have done.

Pay no attention to my advice, folks. I was wrong, and just learned something new. NWC respects fermatas when a composition is played within the program, but other techniques must be used for the fermata effect when exported to MIDI. Since I am in the habit of rehearsing songs within NWC, I never realized that there was a difference!
