Keyboard to sound card plug

I have a laptop with limited sound-card plug-ins -- only microphone and earphone jacks. What will be needed when I want to enter music from my keyboard to my computer?

If you don't have a suitable MIDI/joystick port, then your other choices are dependent on what ports are in your computer. You need a MIDI interface. These come in a variety of schemes:

- USB
- Serial Port
- PCMCIA card

You can search for these in this forum to learn more about what others have chosen. Naturally, you can only use a scheme that employs a port that exists on your computer.

I have PCMCIA slot and a while back saw some software advertised that, if I understood right, made it possible to use PCMCIA for joystick entry. Did I interpret you correctly about joystick? Is that the best (only?)way of achieving MIDI In to a computer? I will also do some searches of this forum. Thanks.

No, you don't want a joystick connector (on desktops, these ports ten to support dual use as a MIDI port). You want a device that gives you a MIDI interface capability (see above).

OK - got it clear in my head this time. Thanks. Will look for means of either plugging in to my PCMCIA slot or a USB port. Will do search now.
