How do I add reverb or chorus to my MIDI file?

How does one add a lot of reverb to his MIDI file? It seems Noteworthy Composer can't do this... I have a AWE32 sound card; is there a way I can adjust the reverb manually through the sound card? - or - Do I need to purchase special software to do this? If so what kind do you recommend?

Thank You!

Probably only be able to give a generic response. However, here it is.

Under the Playback Instrument screen are boxes to allow one to change the controllers (0) and (32). If your soundcard supports chorus and reverb (which I think the AWE 32 probably would), you may be able to check the card and wavetable documentation to determine what controllers to assign to what program. Somewhere in the forum I discussed the process of selecting additional sounds available through the Yamaha XG wavetables. Fairly complex.

Another solution is to find a shareware or other program (I suspect the AWE 32 disk should have something of that nature) that has midi controls for chorus, reverb and other effects. Makes life a lot easier. Then, if you prefer to create in Noteworthy, do so, and export as a midi to those programs. The midi controls on those programs can control the playback as to chorus, reverb, modulation.

By the by: I love my Ensoniq PCI and its wavetables. Its mixer has chorus, reverb and other effects. A 1370 or 1371 can be picked up off ebay for typically $ 10-15.

Also, don't overlook the Yamaha XG50, 60 and 100 soft synth series. They have pretty good wavetables and support several effects. Fred Nachbauer swears by them. Some of the additional programs (i.e. instruments) would have built in reverb, etc. and therefore would avoid some of the complexities trying to introduce those components by use of the controllers noted earlier.

Just remembered: It was tough getting Noteworthy to recognize the additional instrument sounds without playing with the controllers, so ignore my final comments.

Controller 91 (generally controls reverb depth) will be supported in NWC version 1.70, via the Multi-point Controller item. This will first appear in beta 2.

Steve, in regards to the extended XG sets, you can use all the XG voices. In the manual that comes with the XG synth (at least with mine) is a list of all the instruments.. along with their MSB and LSB values. If you open up the instrument menu in noteworthy you will notice that underneath where you select the instrument.. is an msb box and an lsb box. Just enter the corresponding values into those boxes and whammo, there you go.. you're using that instrument!

Yup. Not how deep you aim your sci-fi stun gun. Phasing is similar to chorus and flanging, but uses a faster and usually more extreme modulation. The effect is that whooshy-trippy 60's acid-rock sound.

Really good news! Thanks for supporting Controller 91.

Is it the only addition to the list of supported Controllers?

No. You get some others. The list is controllers 1,4-6,8,11-13,91-95. The new beta will be released later today.

Uh, oh. Sounds like I need to learn some technical stuff and figure out what each of those controllers do and whether to insert them on the Controller 0 or 32 in Noteworthy depending upon which card or softsynth driver I am using. Anyone know of some good basic references or guides? (Suspect it may be card dependent, but . . .)

Alternatively, are the noted controllers already incorporated in the new categories under the multi-point controller? (Like depth, chorus, etc.). If someone happens to know, could save me some time trying to puzzle the matter out.

Now, if there was just an easy way of making the additional instruments available and visible (such as the extended sets under Yamaha XG) . . . .

I just installed the beta. Don't worry about learning controller numbers.

The list is Tempo, Volume, Stereo Pan, Breath Control, Pitch Bend, Modulation Wheel, Foot Controller, Portamento Time, Data Entry MSB, Balance, Expression, Effect Controller 1, Effect Controller 2, Effects (Reverb) Depth, Tremolo Depth, Chorus Depth, Celeste Detune Depth, and Phaser Depth.

So far the help mentions only the first 5. I hope they get time to document the rest before 1.70 goes final. Otherwise I'll be needing either a good MIDI reference or a lot of time to experiment.

Grant and Shane: thanks for the clarification and help.

Quick aside: I had upgraded my Yamaha S-YXG50 softsynth a while back. Could no longer find the instrument controller info which used to be in the help file. Apparently was included with the earlier version that came with the actual card, but not with the subsequent upgrade.

In any event, had installed the older card and software and was able to retrieve the instrument tables. Have the older help files if someone might need them. The older help files also explain the various controllers are by number.

P.P.S. Took me a while to figure out before, so I'll relay this on for what it's worth (and hope I'm right . . .): Contoller 0 in Noteworthy is the MSB and Controller 32 is the LSB mentioned by Shane. (Did I get that right).

I have too much reverb and chorus in my software. I know it's not the sound card because I recently mistakingly did something to my software that caused it to do this. Play help me because this is hindering my writing process.
