S--- vs. F---- vs. NWC et. al.

The New York Times has published an article by Marcia Biederman, on the subject of S--- v. F--- music notation software. It is a general discussion, not a technical review. The article mentions that there are other program available in a lower price range, but does not mention what they are. I read the NY Times article re-printed in one of my local papers, in California.

This might be a good time for you various NWC enthusiasts to see if the article has been re-printed in your area; if so, let the newspaper know that there are alternatives.

There is currently a discussion along these lines on the rec.music.classical newsgroup. Not a usual topic for this forum. I've added my 0.02€ worth ........

Ah, I should have been more explicit in my first message.

Although the NY Times is not what I would call "family" newspaper, the reprint was in the computing and technology section of a widely-read "family" regional newspaper. The readers of that reprint would be a mix of computer-savvy (not musically savvy, necessarily) individuals, and clueless persons who perhpas have a home computer but don't know what to do with it. There is little likelihood that any of them would tune into to a musician's newsgroup or discussion forum.

I wasn't implying any connection, though come to think of it, the original post in r.m.c. may have been prompted by the NYT article. I just thought it interesting that here was *another* opportunity for getting NWC mentioned :-)

We have had a number of discussions of Sibelius vs Finale vs other programs in the forum on Sax On The Web, where I am a columnist. www.saxontheweb.net forum.saxontheweb.net

I have not used Sibelius, but have used Finale.

I had this interesting experience... went to a music industry trade show (I am a clinician for several instrument and acc manufacturers), and talked to the Coda Music rep. I asked, while showing him some of my music done in NWC, how do I do this in Finale. He answered, well, just like you did right here, pointing at my sheet music. He was dumbfounded when I replied, "No, I did these in NoteWorthy, not Finale."

Well, they have fixed many of my objections to Finale over the last few years. Still it is difficult to use, not user friendly. With NWC, I can produce a piece in probably 10% of the time it takes me to do the same thing in Finale. There are a few things that Finale will do that NWC will not... yet. But new features are coming along daily. Yes, some are work arounds. Also, I use the Crescendo and Boxmarks fonts a lot... thanks Barry!!! BTW, Barry is another saxophonist, too.

I am still looking for the slashed circle symbol, to use for text entry for chord symbols for half diminished chords. Until then, will just have to use m7b5.

For the m7b5 symbol, try either ø (hold ALT, then type 0248 on the number keypad) or Ø (ALT 0216). These and other "Alt" characters can be found by launching the "Character Map" program (charmap.exe) that comes with Windows. (If you don't have it, you can add it using Control Panel | Add/Remove programs | Windows Setup tab).
