Trombone voice too soft?

If you're writing a piece with a trombone part in it, and you want the trombones to be heard without reducing the volume of the other instruments (since the trombone voice is too soft... I'm a trombone player and always play out), simply change the voice to trumpet instead of trombone. This will make it sound louder. This works in part because trumpets and trombones are directly related as brass instruments. Anyone that's played either a bass trumpet or soprano or alto trombone can attest to that.

Also, the trumpet voice works well for tuba parts as well.

When I run out of channels (my synth has 8) I also put french horns on the trumpet patch. There is an advantage of doing this sometimes if the patch doesn't sound right when you play it in it's real life range. (like as Steve suggested, Tuba sounds good on a trumpet patch)
