For NWC payback, which musical instruments mostly closely mimic human voices?

Depends somewhat on the sound card (or sound font, if applicable) that you're using, as well as personal taste. The woodwind sounds (esp. oboe, clarinet and bassoon) can be used to good advantage in many cases. Exception: orchestral work where you don't want the vox to be confused with the "real" woods. I find that in such a situation it's beneficial to combine two different sounds (on two staves, one of which is hidden). I like 27 (jazz guitar) for the "main" sound (typically set at volume 105 or so), and 53, 54 or 86 (choir oohs, choir aahs, choir pad) for the other staff (at lower volume, typically around 85-90). Using different patches like this also helps differentiate between different voices (e.g. in duets, trios, etc.)
