string notation

Hi all,
Has anybody found a way to express classical guitar string notation - an encircled number above the individual note(s) concerned?

If it can't be done as a feature of NWC, does anybody know of a font where characters are encircled?

It wouldn't be too hard to create such a font yourself. Do a search at some freeware sites (i.e. tucows, download.com) and see if you can find a font editor. Load up Times New Roman, and draw a little circle around the numbers.

Only problem with "roll-your-own" fonts is portability... unless you exported the font with your published nwc files, then the user would have to install them... and so on.

Perhaps this could be put on the wish-list for the next version of "Boxmarks," which has become the de facto standard for auxiliary nwc symbols. Barry Graham, are you reading this?

Trying not to!

(There are other fonts available that have circled numbers but I don't know them)

In the WingDings font (I think it comes with Windows) there are some circled numbers.
Try Alt 0128 to Alt 0138 (do NOT forget the zero, I did not tell Alt 128 ...) for black number in white circle, and Alt 0139 to Alt 0149 for white on black.
Sorry, there is no 11, 12...22 numbers as you may need for complete guitar frets numbering !!

But this has already been discussed earlier. Add it to the wish ist (since there is no such numbers in my 10 musical fonts). I'm planning (in summer maybe) to make a "madmarks" font, but shouldn't we keep on one and only font, Barry's one ?

HTH, and though it's a bad habit to quote oneself, also refer to https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=494 reply 4 and https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=497 reply 2.

The circled numbers in guitar music refer only to "which string" - i.e. 1 through 6, so Marsu's solution is a good one indeed. (Fret positions are usually shown with C- [Roman numeral], like C-VIII would be barred at the 8th fret).

PS - Regarding "Madmarks," how about expanding on "Boxmarks?" Maybe we could rename it "madboxmarks" or just "madbox.ttf" ;-)

Although most of the "easy" keystrokes have been used up, there's lots of room in the ALT 0xxx area for creative symbols. I believe that Barry has an informal wish-list for new symbols, and he doesn't seem too keen on doing yet another version :-)

Marsu and all,
You are quite right. I'm new to the forum and although I made it a point to check the archives and FAQ, I missed the very relevant comments about classical guitar notation. That, and other questions have been answered. (Add mine to the voices clamouring for the retention of the experimental layering feature). The Wingdings alt0xxx numbers did it. Another answer even spurred me on to create my first font. I now sympathize with Barry and his groans - it's not difficult, but tedious!

I think it's time to pay my registration, since the only remaing problem I had with NWC is now solved. I'll pay the man for Softy (a font editor) too since I foound it very workable and unpretentious.

Thanks all.

I use a simple system with a choice of user font and dont bother with the circle, but just use italicised, small size such as: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th or 6th as req'd. I prefer this to the circled convention now.
