Windows media player should play either type 0 or type 1 files just fine.  Not sure what's different about your computer.  In NWC 1.75, just select File, Save As and choose either type 0 or type 1 MIDI as the file type.

Type 0 MIDI has all the MIDI information contained on a single track.  If you import it into a MIDI editor, then everything will show up in the same track.  Type 1 MIDI breaks each MIDI channel into it's own track.  Again, if you import it into a MIDI editor, you will see each channel on its own track.  A lot of electronic keyboards that let you load MIDI files want the files in the type 0 format.  Otherwise, type 1 is more flexible.

There have been several postings on the forum recently on creating a WAV or MP3 file from your NWC file.  just do a search and you should find it pretty quickly.
