Check for Preview Updates missing in Help pulldown.

The check for updates is not available in the Help pulldown of version 1u.

"I notice that there is no mechanism in P1u to check for updates."
But: The "Access NoteWorthy Software.com" site works as a version checker.

Yes, it does. If you hover over the command, it actually describes the command in the status bar.

It requires NWC2 to be maximised - otherwise not visible.

I haven't quite gone yet... I notice that now, the Help > access NoteWorthySoftware.com choice leads to a more useful web page. Check it out.

I am not sure what this means. The NWC2 status bar is visible whenever View, Status Bar is enabled.
