Feature requests

I use Noteworthy a lot and would like to see some enhancements in the next version.  Right now I really miss the following:

1. I use a lot of custom soundfonts, some that I compiled myself.  It would be great if the instrument tab automatically picked up instrument names from soundfonts.  Currently you have to manually write the instrument names in NTWPATCH.INI file.

2. Hear note as you place them on staff

3. A staff "Duplicate" or a powerful copy/paste function which allows you to copy/paste staff properties (eg. instrument, volume, etc) as well as notes and events.  Currently you can only copy/paste notes and events on a staff.

4. Change the length of selected notes even if the notes are of different lengths.  Currently you can only change length or multiple notes if all the selected notes are of same length.

5. Improve the MPC pitch function.  I use this event quite often. But sometimes it really messes up the tempo for no apparent reason.

2. is in version 2 already.

Try number 4 again.  It works for me in both versions 1 and 2.  I just entered a whole note, bar line, half, quarter and 2 8ths, highlighted them all, and pressed the minus sign.  They all changed correctly.  I then highlighted them and pressed the plus sign, and they all increased, to a maximum of a whole note, each time I pressed it.

Your other suggestions are good.  You should post them all to the wish list.

I am using v 1.75.  Is v.2 you are referring to same as 1.75b (eg the latest available from this site)?

I like your suggestion on #4, but I was asking for something a little different.  Perhaps I should have been clearer.  I want to be able to select multiple notes of varying lengths and set them all to a specific length.

For example, I want to select a whole note, half note, an 8th note, and set them all simultaneously to quarter length.  With v 1.75, you can't set to a specific length unless all notes are of the same length to begin with.

Changing a group of notes to the same length is quite unusual. It looks as if the Noteworthy-interface blocks it, saying 'you can't possibly mean to do that'. In theory, it would be simple, but I doubt if it would be high on the wish list of many.
Then again, I could be wrong: how would you use it, and would you use it regularly?

Rob, it probably is a handy feature when working with an imported midi file.

Kazi, it seemed to work painlessly in NWC2, on a very quick experiment.  In NWC1.75b, you can do it, but it takes a few keystrokes.

Highlight the notes in one block.  Press the + key until they are all whole notes.  Now pick the number for the note value you want (3=quarter notes).

It worked for me with Bar 1 = whole note; Bar 2 = half, quarter, two eighths; Bar 3 = 4 sixteenths, 2 eighths,  half.  Highlight all of them, then 4 taps on the + key, then press 3.

I tried it with your note values, too.  It took only 3 + taps because your smallest value was an eighth.

Unfortunately it's not the single keystroke that you would like, but it's still a heck of a lot more convenient than changing each note individually.

Hi David,
good tip!  I just tried it in the other direction too (-) and works just the same.

Kazi, I like your other suggestions too, those not already in V2 that is.  Especially 3.

BTW, V2 is not 1.75b.  It is a significantly upgraded version that is in public beta at the moment.  More details here.

That's a good tip David.  Very likely a time saver for me.

Believe it or not, I compose a lot of my music by manually entering the notes. No keyboard or external midi input.  I use my Ibanez as a sounding board of ideas more than anything.

I experiment a lot before settling on a melody, rhythm, etc.  So I would like as much freedom in editing as possible.

Rob that's a good question.  But there might not be an exact scenario where I'd want to use this. Typically for me, the need arises when I am experimenting and shuffling through numerous permutations and possibilities.  Sorry if that's too general.

Lawry, thanks for pointing out the version differences.  I'll check 'em out.  I've just peeked into v.2, and it looks promising!
