MIDI Chanells

Can anyone give me a list of all the MIDI channels- i.e. what insruments are assigned to what channels?

Thanks

Within NWC, I think all channels default to Piano except Channel 10.  You just set them to what you want.  If you have a particular group of settings you like, just set them up once, and save that file to use as a template in the future.

To be strictly accurate, all channels default to instrument 0 (or 1, depending on what base you use), which is acoustic grand piano in the General Midi standard. If by some chance you have an ancient keyboard that doesn't conform to GM standard, it might not be. For example, my old Yamaha PSS-780 had instrument 0 as synth brass. It also had channel 16 as the percussion channel, rather than 10. But then, I never used to use it for output anyway, so it didn't matter.

Actually, I believe, although I haven't tested it, by default NWC doesn't send an instrument control, so each channel uses whatever the last instrument it used was.

But the short answer is - you can assign any instrument to any channel, except for channel 10 (assuming it's GM), which is reserved for percussion, in which case each note is a different instrument - see DRUMREF.NWC for details.

Correct. This allows you to manually set the instrument before play on some synthesizers. For example, this can be useful on an external MIDI keyboard.
