Vertical System Spacing

It seems that V2 uses a different method to vertically space out the systems on a page.  I am using a vocal with piano accompaniment layout.  The software is determining that three systems should be printed on each page.  This is leaving a SIGNIFICANT amount of white space on the bottom of each page (making it look like the music was just printed on the top portion of the page).  The margins are all set to the .7 inches.  In the 1.75b version it seems (from what I can tell) that the program would add space in between the systems to make the entire page be occupied.  While I imagine I can adjust the staff dimensions to force the page to be filled, this really seems like a step backwards.

To be a bit more specific, each system is taking up about 2.5 inches leaving a blank bottom space of 3.25 inches.

YOUR SPACING DISCRIPTION IS MUCH MORE ACCURATE THAN MINE . I AM ALSO WRITING A VOCAL LINE WITH PIANO ACCOMPANYMENT AND NEVER HAD THE SPACING PROBLEM IN VER 1.75 SO SOMTHING HAS CHANGED IT IN VER 2

I can't be more specific, but it may have something to do with the extra default space under the bottom staff. This change was requested to give a better view of the bottom staff where there are many staves. It may be worth a look.

Well, I've noticed this problem using the viewer (can't actually use version 2 yet...) and I think it looks pretty bad.
I'm hoping that when I do get NWC2, I'll be able to compensate for it.
But that will mean altering every one of my 2,803 files...
Some things are better left unchanged.

IIRC the change was something to do with the proper display of the copyright notice. But whatever, the cure is too drastic.

... that might explain why I've never seen the problem described, since I don't use the copyright notice within NWC.

I personally prefer much more the V2 behaviour! I can actually decide how much space leave in between each system; with V1.75 just increasing the lower vertical size of the last staff did not produce any effect on the final page layout as far as space amongst the various systems was concerned until you reached a "threshold value" and the last system was moved to the next page.
If you just want to evenly space your systems, increase lower vertical size of the last staff. So you can get the preferred layout for your page and also obtain the same effect as with V1.75.
Maybe the better solution (so we can be both happy) is to include a check box so the user can decide whether to have a "manual" or "automatic (decided by NWC as in V1.75)" system vertical spacing.

In NWC 1.75, a centering scheme is performed on the collection of systems on a page. In NWC2, no such centering is performed. We will consider alternate techniques for giving you the ability to better control how the systems are placed on the page in NWC2.

For the benefit of those of us who use metafiles, a choice of schemes might be preferable.

Another thing to consider on this topic, is that if one uses a title on the first page, changing the global staff size/spacing doesn't work well for helping the page layout on the subsequent pages.  What happens, is that if you make the systems big enough to make the full pages (without a title) look right, then you end up with only a really sparse first page (maybe one system) which looks really wrong.  On the other hand, if you make the systems small enough to make the first page work, you end up with problems on the 2nd, 3rd, etc., pages.

The good thing about the 1.75 algorithm, is it seemed to spread out the systems to fill the page, and let you actually set the staff size to reflect the size that the staff really needed to be (kind of like setting a minimum).  I totally agree that some additional options in how to layout the systems would be VERY helpful.

I don't exactly understand what could be the problem,
whether it is due to v1.75b employing some centering algo,
or v2.0 not having that, or just my settings. I had a score
file that I created using v1.75b, made sure that preview
and print is okay, meaning centered horizontally and
vertically to my desire, then, opened it up in v2.0,
and I got the same result, preview and print, and all.
does this explain anything?

I would like to see (maybe optionally) a centering algorithm for page layout. I personally don't really care whether the staffs line up between page one and two (although I know that some people do), but I have noticed that all my new scores seem to be noticeably pushed up towards the top of the page and it drives me crazy.

Thanks for the consideration,

John

Adjusting the top vertical size may help too.  For me it seems to give a more predictable result.

If working with three staffs, I would set the top size of the first staff to, say, 20 and the bottom size to 10. The second staff I would use 10 and 10, and the third staff would be set to 10 and 20.

The next update will include changes in this area. A vertical justification option will be included in the Page Setup Options.

What do you want, a medal? (Poisson d'avril - april fool!)

Seriously, thanks very much. It will make a lot of difference.
