Patching soundfonts with timidity

OK, so this isn't a NWC question, but it's MIDI related at least.

I've been trying to get soundfonts to work, and have only been successful with Timidity. I have the recommended soundfont set, and while it does sound better than my ordinary MIDI, I don't like it as much as Wingroove for some reason. Supposedly though, Timidity accepts .sf2 patches, and I could go searching for good patches for the instruments I like to use. That is, if I had even the slightest clue how to do this. I have an .sf2 file of the instrument I want to patch, and I want that to override the ordinary patch set, but I have no clue how to do this and the nonexistant help file ain't no help at all.

Anybody know how to do this?

My understanding is that Timidity is a Linux piece of software.  I looked at it and read the 'instructions' including that it could and did use soundfonts- what I understood from my reading was that you would have to delete the set you have and replace it with the one you want.
If you have a soundcard that accepts soundfonts why are you using Timidity?

Ok, so this isn't about soundfonts, but it's still about timidity.  I want to know how to run the darn thing!!  I can play midi files fine but how do I convert from midi to wav?  I know it's possible with this program, but HOW DO I DO IT??  Is there a button I push or something?  I accidentally converted one file but I can't find out how I did it. "I have no clue how to do this and the nonexistent help file ain't no help at all" -- right on, dude.  Where's the help file that's usually included?  I don't see one.

Here are the steps to converting a midi file to a wav file on timidity:

1. Open the midi player (not the "consol").
2. Open your file (in MIDI format).
3. Go into Preference (under Config).
4. Go into the Output Section.
5. Right under the "Output" section of this, there should be a menu-type thing (next to the Option button). It probably reads "Windows audio driver" or something like that. Change it to "RIFF WAVE file".
6. Click "Apply" and then play the file. When finished, there should be a WAVE file in the same folder (or the specified in the Output section).

Good Luck!
