CODA D.S. Trouble

How do you insert a D.S. al Coda and that sort of System?

Press the "f" key (Flow direction) and select DS al Coda from the pulldown.

Remember that you have to put the instruction at the same point on every staff in the system. It will only print on the top staff, the others will display the DS in grey in the editor window.

Thanks, both of you. The thing is You can't use 'Special endings' with '1st/2nd time only',and i found out about this system at PianoNanny.com. Thanks again.

I'm not sure what you are saying here?  I use the "Special Endings" with "1st/2nd time only" ALL the time.  In fact, it's one of the reasons I bought Noteworthy over others.  It was the ONLY notation program that I evaluated that worked consistently with special endings, DS, Coda, etc.  Now, if Noteworthy had just chosen something other than the underscore in lyrics for skipping notes ..... 8-)

I guess you mean when a note has a lyric sometimes and sometimes not. When a note never has a lyric on it I use the Note property to say "never". This is, as you will know, by selecting the note(s) and Alt-Enter, Alt-L for lyric in the "notes" tab, and N for never.

Graeme, I was aluding to the fact that since Noteworthy uses the UNDERSCORE a "control" character to skip notes, you can't use it as part of your lyrics.  For example, when a word in the lyrics spans two or more notes, traditional notation (and EVERY other notation program I've evaluated) uses the underscore to do this.  The suggested workarounds (such as an Alt+0+1+5+5) are less than adequate.  Why couldn't something less useful have been used for the "skip" control character (such as the tilde (~) or carat (^), etc).  I've NEVER seen them in the lyrics of a song.  I've put this in the "suggestion" box and I've seen that others have asked for it.

I insert the ______________ as a text item, because even if NWC did what you wanted, there would be too great a distance between the notes.  In other words, a note with ________ under it would take up as much space as an eight-syllable word.  Go ahead and give it a try, using ________ or -------- or ———————.  You'll see what I mean.  (btw, it's Alt+151 or Alt+150.)

Ray Z. - You're certainly right IF that's how it was handled!  Of the 8 notation programs I evaluated, at least 3 of them handled the underscore in lyrics as follows: The first underscore following a lyric word was treated as part of the word, belonging to the original note above the word.  The second (and subsequent underscores) belonged to subsequent notes, with the software supplying enough "repeated" underscores to provide visual alignment (for all I know it was drawing a line graphically?).  So, for example, in the song we three kings, the chorus begins with the word "Oh" (or "O" depending on the publisher ;-) and covers two half-notes (sorry for the Americanism).  You would write the lyrics "Oh__" (with two unserscores).  This would "draw" enough underscores (or graphic line) to cover both notes.  In essence, you don't care how many underscores are actually needed, you only know that one underscore per note will do the job.  As I said, three notation programs handled the underscore this way.  However, the only program I can think of right now that does this is "Mozart".

Keep in mind, I still choose to use noteworthy because overall, regardless of price, it provides the best combination of functionality and ease for my needs.
