Hide part of staff?

OK, heres's one.  In the past, it has been possible to hide the entire staff in a file, but if you want to hide just part of the staff, then you have had to print and do a physical cut-and-past, or else move the file to a word processor (I have done this with MS Word, and it is a major source of rectal discomfort, plus you cannot do any editing within a file without everything going bugger-up).

I have had NWC 1.70 for several years.  I just upgraded to 1.75.6, and the notices about the new version lead me to think that it *may* be possible to hide part of the staff (by defining it as a zero-line staff).  This is connected with the new potentiality for making four-line or six-line or whatever staves.  What I don't have a clue about is how to do it.  I find that how-to-do-it questions are *never* answered in the help files.  You may find a description of a command that will do it, but since you don't know how to issue the command (why on earth would the help file *not* tell you that?), it does no good.

So how do we go about making non-pentagrammatic staves?  And can we define part of a staff as zero-line, or is it still all or nothing?

Yes, WMFs pasted into MS Word are discomforting, BUT... try the FREE "Open Office" software from

http://www.openoffice.org

Their word processor (with integrated drawing tool) does a fine job of allowing WMF editing.

Believe me, this is the way to go. The only things I have found that does a better job are profe$$ional drawing programs.

It is, indeed, still all or nothing.
To set the number of lines per staff,
press F2,
select the Visual tab (Lines is set to 5 as default).

Although it would be nice if we could hide part of a staff for printing (such as, instrumental prologue to choral music), the catch is that the change would percolate throughout the page layout on all pages. Not an impossible task, but not trivial.

I advise using WMFs with Open Office. I do it and am very satisfied with the results.
