MIDI IN MIDI OUT and MIDI HOST?

I have a Yamaha CVP94 which has a MIDI IN, MIDI OUT and a MIDI HOST connector.  The MIDI Host connecotr has a switch for MAC/PC1/PC2/MIDI.  Tells me to use a standard 8-pin MINI DIN to 9-pin D-SUB cross cable.  A) Where can I find this cable? It doesn't seem to be very popular.  B) What does it do for me?  Why is it preferred?

Thanks!

I think Yamaha carries a "TO HOST" cable, but this might have changed. You probably can special order the item from a Yamaha dealer.

We have a Yamaha CVP piano hooked up to a notebook computer via a "TO HOST" cable. Why do we use this cable? Well, the notebook computer we are using does not have MIDI ports or compatible Joystick port, so the "TO HOST" cable works well in this situation. The "TO HOST" cable connects to the notebook computer's serial port, and a special MIDI driver is installed on the PC that communicates with the CVP piano via the serial port over that cable.

Some Alesis keyboards also provide for this kind of connection. It might be that the Alesis cable will work for a Yamaha, but you should verify this before making any kind of purchase decision using this approach.
