Midi keyboard

I'm new to noteworthy. I bought a midi cable that plugs into my PC via the joystick port. I've set it up as the instructions, and tried both a yamaha midi enabled keyboard and korg triton. The midi input active button is not greyed out, I hit record, play the keyboard and nothing happens. Am I missing something obvious? Do I need to tell the keyboard to play midi somehow?

Are you following the procedure spelled out in faq #53?

I'd tried that before, but just tried putting midi in, in the out and out in the in, and it worked! Many thanks for your help.
