Skewed Playback

The playback to a piece is now skewed. Previously it was fine. The only thing I have done is this: I muted two staves so I could hear the other two. Ever since I restored the muted staves, the playback plays with hiccuping, or halting every several beats. Makes for a really irritating playback. It's as if a 16th note has been inserted invisibly to all four voices, here and there. Is this a software glitch or what?? Thanks.

Hmmm could be your soundcard - mine does something similiar, it distorts when I've had the computer on for a long time or have lots of applications running. Have you tried rebooting your computer?

I do not totally understand what you mean by "halting every several beats" from your post. Assuming that a piece plays normally, simply muting then unmuting one or more parts will not cause any substantial change in the way a piece is played. A very complex passage could possibly alter play back performance, and could be alleviated by muting it, but this behaviour would be consistant, manifesting itself before the first muting operation.

There are things that you could do to your system that would cause poor play back performance, such as:

- running many background tasks
- corrupting the installed copy of NWC
- installing hardware that has resource conflicts, especially IRQ conflicts
- installing poorly behaved drivers

but these would have nothing to do with simply muting and unmuting parts...

oops, tab key :(
I was about to write: do you have some DOS window/session launched? This may particularly be bad for timers and midi (sometimes sharing it, sometimes not).

Thanks for the replies! The glitch is gone, thank goodness! Two of your suggestions may have been at the root of the problem - I rebooted the computer. However, I turn the computer off every night and back on every morning, and I think the problem covered a couple of days, so there were probably a couple of reboots. The other thing that may possibly have been the fault was that I may have had too many programs open. This morning when the glitch was gone, I was running only Windows, Outlook, and the Noteworthy program (of course). What still is a mystery is that other pieces played back perfectly during the time that the skewed piece was still skewed. ??? Oh well, the glitch is gone, so I'll just let go of the mystery. Thanks again - great software!

If it's any help in solving your mystery, I don't think it was so much the number of programs you had open as it was *which* programs. Anything that accesses the disk or grabs some memory momentarily will reduce the resources available to Noteworthy. A mail-checking program that suddenly hits the web on scheduled rounds, a TSR that lurks in the background or a program that autosaves at regular intervals can cause the 'hiccup' you mentioned. These glitches would, of course, be random. If your problem always occurred at the same points in the song - well, you've still got a mystery.
HTH,

"A mail-checking program that suddenly hits the web" =>
This is especially likely if you are running an internal modem (win modem). I have found that an external modem, which does all the stuff necessary to connect/communicate, does not create pauses/stammering of NWC playback.
