The "tr" and "tr~~~~" are simply text expressions.

Go to Insert / Text -- this will bring up a box and you can type whichever you would like. To make the sound of a trill, you must create a hidden staff. Check the Moonlight example in the Samples folder.

There is a trill symbol (and much more) in the Boxmarks font which you can get from the Helpful Files section of the NWC Scriptorium. This font comes in a .zip file with instructions on its installation and use.

Inserting the symbol, of course, makes no difference in the sound you get when you play the file in NWC or export to MIDI. For that there's no alternative to writing out all of the little notes that make up the trill.

You can, if you wish, get both the look and sound of the trill at the same time by inserting the trill symbol on a visible but muted staff, and writing out the trill in full on a hidden but audible staff.

A simpler while lower quality trill can be achieved by adding invisible grace notes if you want to survive the double-staff trouble.

Personally I prefer to use MPCs on (usually 2 or 3; 1 or 2 for mordants). Do not forget to reset the normal tuning as the last action in the last MPC :)
This allows you not to add extra notes nor a hidden staff.
It even allows you to make it sound more real (as on a true grand flute, some trills don't sound exactly well; with Pitch bend you can do that :)

I think it's already in the users tips, (...a bit of searching...) yes, Olivier wrote it:
