Using layering - is there a better way?

I was trying to notate some piano music with a common
pattern in the right hand 3/4 time - two lines -
the top one minum followed by two quavers, (I think
that's "half" note followed by two "eighth" notes) the
bottom thread was a crotchet followed by a minum chord
("quarter" note rest followed by a "half" note chord).

To enter this I had to place the rest first (stem down)
then add the minum (stem up) as a chord member. I could
then add the minum chord in the bottom thread (stems down),
but I couldn't add the quavers as belonging to the top
thread, they always added onto the end of the minum chord.

To get around this, I had to use layering. That wasn't
too much of a big deal, except what to do with all the other
bars? I ended up copying everything to the new stave.
Naturally that causes an issue with editting and changing.
Is there a simpler way to just "blank out" the intervening
bars? (or is that a new feature in the next release).

Is there a way to notate the (fairly common) pattern,
without layering that I've missed?

The NWC 1.70 beta release (available at http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/nwcpreview ), makes layering much easier, mainly because it allows you to hide notes. You can simply pad out the parts of the layered staff you don't need with hidden rests. There is no longer any need to have any duplicate notes.

If I understand your question, there is a solution with the next version. I did not try it, but it should work.

As before, you place the rest first (stem down) then add the minum (stem up) as a chord member. Now you add another rest (stem up) and the minum chord (chorded with this second rest, stem down). Then you add the quavers.

Ok, you can do it with current version, but the additional rest is ugly. The great thing is that, with NWC 1.70, you can hide this rest. Fine, isn't it ?

Oh no you can't! Or if you do you also have to hide the minim chord. A chord including its rest can only have one visibility property.

By the way, in 1.70 you do not even have to pad the layered staff after the last part you use.

Simply insert a bar line just before the end, and mark it invisible. The double bar will show up on the screen but NOT in the printout, and it plays back properly.

Oops, forget that last statement. It does not work. You must pad to the end of the song with invisible rests.
