Does anyone have any info on getting songs published (as in,
with a record company)? Someone I know uses NWC and wants to
go big time.

Musician's Friend ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com ) has been posting some great articles by Taxi, a publisher/independent-musician go-between service, both on publishing and home recording. They might answer some of your questions.

I have also read that simply registering your works with the U.S. Copyright Office is the first step to getting your works recognized. Publishers apparently do periodic reviews of recent submissions for useful works to their targeted genre. It certainly is worth the try!
