Thank you for your replies, they make sense. AH HA! That is why when I used the "SOLO" style it returned to the original and what I hear you guys saying is that any of the others would do the same. Got it! The other question I had was more of an "I wish" that there was a way to have an option to actually visually see the rests that are being added with these performance styles on the Noteworthy scores. This instead of having to export them to .mid. And with that option, be able to make changes to them. Slurs and actual rest additions are what I had been using in the past and certainly work fine. From what I have experienced, some of the Noteworthy additions (such as breath marks that are adjustable) are not recognized by my Studio One DAW and so cannot be used. (too bad because they are convenient). Having Noteworthy, Kontakt 5, and Studio One 2 (plus the long list of virtual sampled instruments that each have their own users guide) I find myself going crazy at times trying to keep everything straight. But one of the reasons I have stuck with Noteworthy was and is, due to its intuitive simplicity. Thanks for your help!!! Terry
HI! Forgive me if I ramble a bit but I have a question about performance style options that is not covered much in the instructions. I am a church organist and copy old hymns out of hymnals into Noteworthy and then export them as .mid files into my DAW and play them at church through a digital Allen via midi with my laptop. I add other virtual instruments in tracks to play along with the organ. I'm trying to hone my skills at making the Noteworthy notation playback sound more natural. Since the congregation sings along with me, I have to add quite a bit of rubato so as to give them time to breath and to accentuate phrases. I am trying to get better at this. I am exploring the options in the performance style list. I understand that when adding notation "as is"; rests (which are invisible in the Noteworthy score) are automatically inserted after notes to make the playing sound natural note-to-note. When I export them as .mid files, I can see these rests in the score. After adding "legato" to the track, I see that those rests seem to be eliminated. So I tried tenuto and that appears to be somewhere in between "as is" and legato. But I did not know how to get back to "as is" after adding legato. So I tried Solo from the list and this seems to bring me back to the "as is" sound. I also tried sotto voce and that seems to be similar to solo. Stacatto works as would be expected as well. Now I am wondering just how many of the performance styles actually change the score and how I can find out more about what each one actually does. When I asked this question to "Noteworhty Support", I was told that the only performance styles that actually changed the score playback are legato and staccato. Is there any way to actually make these changes visible in the Noteworthy score ...or information that can help me with this subject? Thanks!!! Terry
As a side question involving the use of Viewer, I normally use the SATB template for hymns. When I switch to Viewer, it combines (overlays) the Alto and Tenor staves (one on top of the other). Is this normal?
Thanks Rich! I totally see what you're getting at here. Sort of like constructing a "playlist". It sounds interesting and I'll give it a try! Thanks a lot for taking the time to think this through and respond. Terry
Thank you for your replies. They do answer my question and I will try using the viewer option this Sunday as suggested. I just tried it and indeed it works with the space key. Terry
I understand that it sounds confusing. But I believe that the problem lies with the fact that the f keys have other functions on the computer, that they normally perform other than for the Noteworthy software commands. The f6 key has a "lock" icon on it. (a little picture of a lock). I'm not sure what it is that it locks, but I believe that the signal that it sends when it is pressed, is what is locking the organ. I thought that it was just the F6 that was locking the organ but it has occurred once or twice with the f5 as well. Just using the touchpad to move the cursor and hit the start / stop tabs does not send any messages out other than the Noteworthy commands. But...using that method when I'm operating the organ for 500 people in a church, (with the laptop sitting beside me on the organ bench is VERY awkward. As it is set up, the Noteworthy inserts rests with the spacebar.
I am a church organist. I use Noteworthy to compose pieces and play them using Noteworthy midi, on the Allen church organ with midi capability. It works well EXCEPT! I cannot use F6 to stop play because it "locks up" the Allen organ completely. The only way I can make it operational again is to shut the organ off and restart it. Obviously this can be a disaster during a church service. The "start / stop" buttons work without an issue but they are very awkward to use. Is there a way to change the start / stop command to a different keyboard stroke. Something like the space bar would be ideal. Thanks for any suggestions. Terry
First, thank you to everyone. I appreciate the support and suggestions. I will follow up on each one. I did change the Windows media player to NOT be the default player. I don't play any midi material other than when I am preparing performance stuff for the organ and when I'm doing that, I'm using Noteworthy. I also changed the port usage to "while playing" Rick, thanks for that suggestion. Of course the midi cable could be the issue, but I have had no problems with it in the past few months that I used the Anvil Studios software. I will try these suggested solutions during practice times at the organ at church (where I need to be to see when it happens). In the meantime, I will have to go back to using the Anvil software for organ playback during services to avoid a catastrophe. I can still of course use the Noteworthy for editing, which is why I prefer it over Anvil. I will post as I learn. Thanks again to everyone. I DO appreciate it. T.
Hi Lawrie, Thanks for your thoughts. The only midi hookup interface that I have is an M-Audio Midisport. Good thought on the material though. The only files that I have used since I have started with the Noteworthy are organ midifiles that I purchased from an online vendor. I don't know enough about how those files are constructed to know if that could be an issue. I could certainly try some other files and see if that would make a difference. The odd thing is that it never happens when the files are actually playing. It always occurs when the computer is sitting idle.
Actually no, the organ did not return to being operable until I shut it off, waited a few seconds and restarted it.
What occurred exactly is that I was setting the organ up for today's two services yesterday (and using Noteworthy for this, the first time). When I tried to playback one of my Noteworthy music files, hitting the play button, the software began "playing" (notes lit up) as normal, but the organ did not play. I first thought that I had something set wrong on the organ. But when I tried it, iit was totally unresponsive. Nothing worked, no notes, no pistons, no swell pedal, etc. So I stopped the Noteworthy and switched off the organ. After switching the organ back on, everything was normal again and I hit play on the Noteworthy software and it played through the organ as it should. Then it happened again a while later. I have NO screensaver activated on my computer (for this very reason). All of the power saving settings are also off, so the screen will stay on indefinitely. The ironic thing is that I recently replaced ANVIL STUDIOS software (that I was using with no problems with this organ). I purchased Noteworthy because I downloaded the trial version and I liked the functionality better than the Anvil and assumed it would be better quality. Obviously the potential for disaster during a church service is unacceptable. I was terrified the whole two hours I used it this morning, hoping I would not experience the problem at a critical moment.
Hi! Thanks for the reply. No, there is no indication that anything is wrong. Even on the organ. I happened to hit one of the registration preset pistons on the organ to get ready to play a hymn and nothing happened. Since I had experienced this before, I knew right away that it had locked. But one of these times, I'm afraid I'm going to hit the keys on the organ to start playing and nothing will happen. At first, I thought it was happening when I accidently hit the f6 key to "start" the play function instead of the f5. But today it just happened when I was not at the console.
I am using a laptop with Noteworthy2 to "play" service music on a midi capable Allen church organ (which has it's own midi recorder/playback drive). The Noteworthy2 works fine but occasionally the organ functionally "locks up".....i.e., nothing works on the organ until I shut it off (the organ itself) and restart it. Then it functions normally again. It has never locked up when the software is playing music. This morning it did it when I left the organ to get a drink of water. Anyone know what may cause this? The organ has never done this before I started using the laptop and software and doesn't do it when the laptop midi cables are disconnected.
