General Discussion / Re: Big news...and a bigger problem
They're going to kill me. I think I need to hit the 'transpose' button.

General Discussion / Big news...and a bigger problem
I'm excited to say that my first string quartet, created pretty much entirely in an old version of NWC, has made it to the recording phase.
We're not a professional quartet and had to rehearse and record it all in about five hours, but I will admit to being pretty proud of the outcome. If you'd like to have a listen the files can be found here:
http://www.fileden.com/getfile.php?file_path=http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/19/2694898/Incandescent.mp3 (main piece)

Naturally #2 has started to emerge but I am having huge issues.
I should highlight that although I have been playing the violin for longer than I dare think about, I've barely had any formal music theory training and simply work on what's playing in my head. This tends to lead to me starting in C and shoving in loads of accidentals until I work out what key the piece is actually in and adjust it accordingly. I tend to avoid putting in too many flats/sharps because I don't want to freak out the victims who end up having to play it through.
Trouble is, I cannot work out what key(s - I think there are several!!) this next piece is in. I've hit a mire of accidentals and frankly, Toto, we're not in C any more.
If there are any musicians who actually understand what the black things on the page really mean and can give me any help at all with making this playable I would be eternally grateful. And I do mean eternally. I'm happy to hear any ideas which would bring me somewhere near the desired effect but without shedloads of sharps. (Please be gentle. Two of us play the violin. And one plays the viola!)
I've hopefully uploaded the file, although there was an error. It probably detected the horrendously wrong internals and tried to spit it out. For those brave enough, it's...

(This is a skeleton with lots missing but it shows the basic idea.)
Thank you all in advance!
Jenny.

General Discussion / Sound fonts
I was using a MIDI to MP3 converter online and discovered that the instruments sounded a million times better than the ones I'm stuck with. It said it was using "SGM-V2.01".
This means about as much to me as "astrophysics" or "conditional fifths". Can anyone tell me whether I can get these great sounds onto my PC?
Thanks!
Jenny.

General Discussion / Playback problems
This is probably an obvious one but I'm stumped. I accidentally double-clicked on a MIDI file and WMP11 launched to play it. When I closed that down and opened Noteworthy, MIDI playback no longer works (I'll very quietly say that S******s 5 won't play back either).
I've rebooted with no change and have no idea what to do about it. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jenny.

General Discussion / Re: Chord sequences
It's just starting to take shape - I think I've managed 'sadness' but 'grief' may need a little more work! It's a heck of a challenge but pretty enoyable

General Discussion / Chord sequences
This is a general music question as I know there are some seriously talented people on these forums!
I am in the process of writing a string quartet. It's been a long time since I tried anything like this and my knowledge of music theory...well, it sucks.
I am writing this off a set of self-written notes and have reached the words "grief-stricken". However, even sitting and listening to what that produces in my head doesn't really help - I think I may need some theoretical help on what chords and chord shifts might represent 'grief'.
That's an odd one, but if anyone has any ideas...
Thanks,
FN.

General Discussion / Ties won't come off on playback
I have a very simple notation with four bars of the same note, tied together, followed by another four, etc.. On playback, everything seems fine until the third grouping, and suddenly the tied note keeps playing into the next bar and beyond, to the point of a very multi-layered mess!
I have tried ending the tie early and shoving a rest in, but it seems to be a stuck note on playback rather than something that can be fixed through the viewable notation. I'm hoping someone has a fix for this as it makes listening pretty much useless
Thanks,
Jenny.

General Discussion / Re: Help with MIDI input
AND LO: I have discovered a problem. Latency is causing recordings to be a semi-quaver behind the click track. Are there any clever people out there who could create me a brief click track that would compensate for this?

General Discussion / Help with MIDI input
Unsurprisingly, I now cannot get it to work. The cables appear to be in the same way, but I've completely forgotten what needs to be where, what I need to do and just about everything else!
I have a fairly bog-standard MIDI-to-USB connector. When I plug it in I appear to get a 'USB controller' recognised but no notes, so I'm guessing that I haven't setup the software correctly (MIDI input is active). Looking at the 'available play devices' in the MIDI section of Tools>Options I've got:
Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth (says it can't use it as not set up properly)
MPU-401 (?!)
USB Audio Device
USB Audio Device (2)
Microsoft MIDI mapper
In 'Record' I get MPU-401 and USB Audio Device.
I've got absolutely no idea what any of this means, and all I do know is that one day this did actually work.
If anyone can contact me and help, it would be very much appreciated! And yes, I have tried swapping the two MIDI cables over...
Many thanks,
Jenny.

General Discussion / Using MIDI input
I'm horribly new to this - I spent my childhood putting notes manually into a copy of Maestro for an Acorn!
I now have my Yamaha E303 linked to the PC and would like to know the best way of inputting to NWC using it. How well does NWC pick up the notes? Do you have any tips I should before I start?
Many thanks!
Jenny.
