General Discussion / Re: Any Musical Geniouses here?
Steve, et al,

Of course, with exceptions to said "rule", say a V7- IV64- I as in a plagal cadence would be a possible exception (I think... read: disclaimer) I do stand corrected.  Rule #1 to music theory is that there are *always* exceptions to the rules!  Learn the rules, learn the exceptions to the rules, then forget 'em and play what you hear and feel!!  Rules are simply guidelines in music theory, not steadfast law, right? :-)

I digress...

Steve, simply wipe, copy and paste the code directly into a new staff in NWC and you should see!  Got to do it staff by staff this way tho, and all staff properties are lost.

In all honesty, I *thought* genius had been spelled incorrectly, but I'm not one to flame ('specially as a "noob" here) and there was this possibility that "genious" was the "real" British spelling and we yanks dropped the "o"...

Excuses?

It has taken me until now to figure it all out, but I'm finally in there!

Thanks for the help, Tina.

Tina, et al,

The link NoteWorthy Composer Newsgroup by E-mail is a dead end...

Um, pardon my ignorance, but I haven't been to a newsgroup since Win 3.1 and a 486 took me there back in '96... BB's took over shortly after that.
How do I get started and where is it?

Thanks in advance,

Tina,

Thank you for the info.  I guess I wasn't looking around hard enough.

And thank you for your works that come with NWC, I have learned alot by your examples.

I'll check out the newsgroup...

General Discussion / high-note trumpets
Hey Folks,

I figured out (entirely by accident) that to make my GM high-note trumpet parts in  big band style scores sound better is to hide a staff and use Soprano Sax doubling witht the trumpet any note above the Bb above the staff.  This works for my old and cheap sound card (SB AudioPCI 64D not sound-font compatible as far as I know).  If you're not happy with your brass sounds in the upper register, try this trick and see if it works for you.

-Virgil

PS: Anyone know of any way to get this old 'puter to sound better without much $$$?  Being a Gateway G6-400C, it desperately needs replaced soon so I don't want to invest any more in this old thing!

General Discussion / Kudos
To those responsible:

Thank you.  I have used NWC since about 1995 or 96, back in my 486 days...

NWC 2.0 has greatly improved since then, and even since 1.75, let alone the first version.

If I only had a computer and NWC back in college at Berklee, I may not have dropped out!

I do have a question:

Is there a place here that we may post our music for others to enjoy and learn by (and hence, vice-versa)?

I have submitted to Richard's Scriptorium (which seems to be down now) under my name: Virgil Kelly.  There are also a couple of arrangements under Gruber and Adam (Silent Night and O Holy Night) that I've had fun with.

I guess it would be nice to have it all on one site so that we can put usernames with works, and in case Richard spills tea on his server again. (Just kidding, Richard!)

Anyway, thanks again.  I hope to be getting serious with my arranging ang composing and I have NWC to thank for sparking an old love of mine that was almost forgotten!

General Discussion / Re: Making recordings of Nwc 2 files
Jack,

When I record to CD, I use Sound Forge (4.5), which is a very strong wav editting program that converts to CDA using industry standards; and normalizing the left and right channels to unity is a snap with just a few clicks.

I simply play NWC while recording with Sound Forge and use CD Architech to finish the project, which is a Sound Forge add-on tool.  Be careful to not clip the signal... Digital recording is VERY unforgiving with clips.

However, these are expensive, professional software and there are more than likely cheaper options.

But yes, I agree with llucyy, if you don't need to convert to CDA, just point 'em to the NWC viewer!

General Discussion / Re: Any Musical Geniouses here?
Hello Josh,

I hate to consider myself a genious by replying here, but I think I remember enough about Bach-style harmony and figured bass to help you.

The only thing sticking out immediately to me is the subdominant chord following the Dominant.  As a rule (I hate rules tho) the IV chord should never follow a V unless your writing rock-n-roll, blues, or country.  The melody (assuming it can be unchanged) lends to a vi chord here, and it's okay to repeat them...

try this and see:
