Changing Instruments

Does anyone else have the problem with your instrument changing from let's say trumpet to sound effects such as the gun shot?

Do you mean changing in midstream, or just not coming out the way you expect? If it's the latter, you should probably check the channel assignment of your trumpet staff. Channel 10 is reserved for percussion in the General MIDI specification, so if your trumpet staff is assigned to this channel, you should change it. (Highlight the staff in question, press F2, select the Midi tab and change the value in the "Channel" box.)
