Reading the current midi instrument

After listening to various pieces with a mix of instruments and adding and removing staves on another nwc file, a young relative and I listened to our creation.  We had not set an instrument for our new staves but got a surprising duet of some of the instruments from earlier in the session.

Is there a way to read the current patch number of a current midi channel?  TIA

If you are lucky, you synth will support a SysEx dump with this info.
With more luck, you may discover the hex sequence for the SysEx dump.
If you are diligent, you can find software that will send and receive SysEx (System Exclusive) messages.
HTH, but I doubt that it will :(

AFAIK, there are no standard Windows or MIDI functions for this.

Thanks for looking though.  It's not something that would come up frequently anyway.

As a matter of curiosity: do at least some software synth support SysEx dump?
I don't think so, but who knows?
