brackets

Hello,

I want to place accidentals between brackets like this  (  ).
Who can help me?
Many thanks.

While in NWC2, select Page Setup and Fonts.  Choose NWC2STDA as a user font.  A lowercase d,e,f,g, & h will give you your accidentals when you insert text in a score.

What Warren suggests will work, but to get the brackets you'll need 2 text expressions, one for the accidental and one for the brackets.

Another way is to use one of my font suites#.  The *Text fonts in each suite have both accidentals and brackets available - one text expression and no alignment problems.

Or an alternative way to approach it would be to set the note's properties to have extra accidental space, and use the gap thus provided to position your brackets.  the downside of this is it will affect note spaceing in other staves.  This may not be a problem for you.

I tried what Warren suggested, but it don't work. I can do this: (#), (b), bur I can't write a natural accidental. Also I've ised several fonts from Lawrie. No succes.
What do I wrong?

Tried your example. It didn't work too well for me.
  • sharp & dblsharp don't look like the System Font
  • parens are much larger than usually used for courtesy accidentals

Also,  IMO, User fonts designed to supplement the System Font need to be sized so that they are:
  • 1/2 of Staff Metrics
  • equal to Staff Metrics
  • 2x, 3, or 4x Staff Metrics
Your example uses 20pt Staff Metrics and 14pt User1.
If you change to a more standard 16 or 18pt (or a 12pt study score), what change do you make to User1?

I don't use parens around accidentals. Takes up too much horizontal space.

Someday, we will be able to use nwctxt in Edit->Paste as New File :(

Hmm, that would be because I used the wrong font - D'oH

As for the size, perhaps I could have been more careful when I set this up.  I no longer recall what criteria I used to for these glyphs as I usually expect to see the *Dings fonts at 100% of staff metrics.  It may well be that like my Coda and Segno glyphs (I like some things to be quite large so they aren't easy to miss when sight reading and one hasn't really had much time to study the score) I wanted them to be very visible...

You could just incorporate the glyphs into your System Font.
As I've said before, it would be helpful if NWC2 would automatically add the System font to the text font list and properly scale it.

I think this more a matter of preference. Personally I like Lawrie's a bit better. For me it is easier for my tired, nearsighted eyes to make out. I understand that smaller generally fits more onto a page and that can be good, but if the person it is intended for cannot read it then it is no good either. Again both get the job done well and it becomes a matter of personal prefference.

Use preserve width to taste :)  I thought about whether I'd change the preserve width status between examples and on a whim decided not to.  No particular reason for it...

This has come up before - the reason they aren't there is that my system fonts are identical to NWC2STDA in glyph availability.  This choice was made so that should Eric choose to add glyphs for some future update I won't have created problems by potentially using glyph locations he wants for the putative new glyphs...
