Grrr

I just downloaded the trial version for NWC. Making MIDIs was a thing I've always wanted to do...but damn, it's harder than it seems. I'm having a problem though. I was able to make some rythms, but how do you apply them to your staffs? When I move them to a different song they just sound like the same drum played in different pitches, sounding like music. Is there something you have to do to the staff to apply the rythm feature?

Also, just a totally random question, since I'm here. Are there any instruments on NWC that have a sorta techno-y sound, like in the Mario Theme song. I'm lookin' for something that sounds like that. Please help :(

(1) Percussion normally uses channel 10. If you are having trouble with percussion, check it out. On channel 10. the different "pitches" are actually diffeent percussion instruments such as cymbal or snare drum.

(2) The actual instrument sound is not determined by NWC (or by MIDI), any more than the actual sound of music is determined by the sheet music. But if you record MIDI to MP3, you may be able to use a SF2 instrument database, depending on what you want. That's outside the scope of NWC.

Ahh, I know that thing, like different notes are different types of things. And when I saved them as MIDI form they sounded like cool drum rythms. But when I copied them onto another song, instead of being different types of drums they were the same type of drum, with different pitches, making it sound totally different. Instead of the cymbals, it was just a really high drum vibration. I also tried moving to channel 10, and that still didn't work. I tried moving the song onto the rythm template and the whole song turned into drums and cymbals and stuff. So does that mean there's like some kinda staff property that you need to edit in order to make the notes act as different drum types, other than act as music?

1.  Select (click on) the staff that you are using for percussion.

2.  Click on:  Staff | Staff Properties. Then click on the MIDI tab.

3.  Near the bottom of this box you will see a place where you can set the channel number.  Enter the number 10 in this box.

4.  Click OK.  This will set your "percussion" staff so that you can hear percussion sounds instead of instruments.

5.  Other staves should be set to different channel numbers. My computer does this automatically.  Use a different number for each staff. (I usually start with 1 and "climb the ladder", e.g. 1 for staff 1, 2 for staff 2, etc.) Do not use channel 10 again unless you want that staff to sound percussion instruments instead of musical tones.

Also remember to set the instrument to Grand Piano 1 if you want just a standard drum kit. There are different sets of drums (like orchestral, electronic etc.) that can be accessed using different instrument settings.

Also, in some more rare cases, the percussion channel is not 10 but 16.

Interesting...didn't know that. I'll hafta mess around with that...
